Buying Japanese adult video legally from outside Japan

Step 1 — Connect through Japan
The store checks where your connection comes from. A VPN with servers in Japan gives you a Japanese IP address, and the region message stops appearing.

Step 2 — Create an account
Registration is light: an email address, a password, and a six-digit code sent to that address. No date of birth and no identity documents are required, and the age check is the self-declared 18+ button at the entrance. Registering through a social account is also offered.
Step 3 — Pay
This is the hard part, and it is worth being honest about it. Getting a Japanese IP address solves the first problem. Paying is a second problem, and the store’s own documentation is not entirely consistent about it.

Two official statements sit side by side and point in opposite directions:
- The card brand page states that overseas-issued VISA, JCB and Diners cards can be used.
- A footnote on the payment page states that customers from overseas cannot pay by credit card.
We are not going to guess which one governs your attempt. What this tells you is that the card path is unreliable from abroad, and that DMM Points — a prepaid balance you top up and then spend — is the path worth understanding.
Step 4 — Watch or download
Purchased works are available two ways: streamed in the browser, or downloaded through DMM’s own player application (Windows 11 and macOS 11 or later).
Two things to check on the product page before you buy:
- The viewing period. It varies by product, from a couple of days to unlimited. Unlimited products can be re-downloaded as many times as you like.
- Playback is licence-based. The player obtains a licence to play the file; the file alone is not enough. DMM’s help states that a work can become unplayable if its DRM information changes.
Supported devices include PC, smartphones, compatible TVs, Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, Chromecast and PlayStation.
Whether a Japanese connection is needed for playback after purchase is not stated in DMM’s published help, so we will not claim either way. Given that licences are fetched at playback time, keeping your Japanese connection available is the cautious assumption.

Why buy rather than stream for free
