Setting up a Japanese connection

What you actually need
- Servers physically in Japan. Many providers advertise Japan and route elsewhere. Check the provider’s server list.
- Enough speed for video. Streaming needs stable throughput more than peak speed.
- A protocol your device supports. WireGuard is the current default on most platforms.
Setup
- Sign up and install the client for your device.
- Connect to a Japanese server.
- Verify your apparent location before opening the store — any “what is my IP” page will show the country your traffic is exiting from.
- Clear cookies and cache for the store’s domain, or open a private window. A cached region page will keep showing even after the connection is correct.
- Open the store.

Speed and playback
Routing through Japan adds latency proportional to your distance. For video this shows up as slower start times rather than stuttering, provided throughput is adequate. Downloading rather than streaming avoids the issue, and FANZA offers downloads through its own player for products that allow it — though playback still fetches a licence, so the connection matters at play time as well as at download time.
Things worth knowing
- Connecting from outside Japan is outside what the stores officially support. DMM’s help pages list only a handful of its services as usable from abroad, and the video stores are not among them; elsewhere its troubleshooting advice is to disable VPN and proxy connections. If something goes wrong with a purchase, support is not obliged to help with a connection issue.
